Women's Cricket Month makes a busy start

The future of female coaching

The beginning of Women's Cricket Month has been very busy with a varied number of events taking place across the county.

1st June was the date for the Club Champions course at the university, where 12 women from clubs and schools were joined by the Devon Women's Cricket team to build their confidence in coaching and delivery of cricket.

On Wednesday Bovey Tracey hosted a touring girls team from Valley End in Surrey. Possibly the first time this had happened at the club, the event was a great success with a festival day organised between Valley End, Bovey Tracey and Plymouth. The touring team enjoyed the day greatly and were victorious in the mini festival. Discussion is already in place around a return tour and another next year! Lola and Ellie from Bovey Tracey have provided a small report of the event:

The Valley End Cricket Tour started off as just an idea that no one really thought would actually happen, and this idea turned into a reality. The Valley End cricket team travelled three and a half hours, from Surrey to Bovey Tracy, and it was worth the travel, they came 1st. Also Plymouth joined, who came 2nd. But before all of that, B.T.C.C. and V.E.C.C went for a swim at Bovey Tracing Swimming Pool for an 1h Covid Safe. After that, they went to Ullacombe Farm for a great dinner.

The first match was Valley End ( V.E.C.C.) Vs Bovey Tracey ( B.T.C.C.). Valley End batted first, which was a very intense match to watch. Then it was Bovey Tracey batting. The next match was Bovey Tracey Vs Plymouth. This time Bovey Tracey was batting first. It was a nail-biting match. Then it was Plymouth batting. Then it was Valley End Vs Plymouth.

After all the close matches, all the teams has an amazing BBQ hosted by Tiana and Sarah The Outstanding Chefs.

On Thursday Abbotskerswell Women took an education in umpiring ahead of their very successful softball festival at the weekend, which was a great success hosting Ivybridge, Paignton and Exwick until rain stopped play during the afternoon.

On Friday 4th , we had the very first Young Storm Champions course in Devon. The course is an initiative supported by Western Storm and is designed to give girls the skills and confidence to support coaching at their club and therefore become role models for younger girls.  The day consisted of learning about leadership and how to run and mange tasks, as well as simple umpiring and scoring so they could manage a game.

Set against the beautiful backdrop at Teignmouth and Shaldon Cricket Club, the day was a great success. The initiative works on a volunteering basis and so the girls can now earn Western Storm rewards by helping at their clubs or events organised by Devon Cricket during the summer. With 26 participants signed up, the future of coaching in many clubs around the county is in very good hands and hopefully this is the start of the coaching pathway for some in Devon.

And then all this was followed by a busy weekend of All Stars, Dynamos and the Devon Women's Cricket League.

It has been great to see clubs embrace the initiative of Women's Cricket Month and we look forward to seeing further events during the month of June.
