Packed church expected for Bill Matten's memorial service

MORE than 200 mourners are expected for Bill Matten’s memorial service on Monday.
Bill, who died last month aged 94, was a founder member of Sandford CC in 1947 and the last survivor of the club’s first side. For more than 70 years he was involved in cricket administration for the club and later the Devon Cricket League. He was also a Premier Division umpire for more than a decade.
Sandford made Bill a life member in 1989, added president to his roles in 1991 and named the pavilion after him in 2017 to celebrate his 90th birthday. He was also a life member of the Devon Cricket League.
Bill worshipped at St Swithun’s Church in Sandford village, which is where the memorial service will be taking place. Start time is 12.30pm. A private cremation service will take place earlier in the day.
Phil Matten, Bill’s son and a lifelong cricketer and umpire himself, said car parking will be available at the Rose & Crown pub or in the village hall car park.
“Alternatively, people can park at the club if they can arrange to get into the village with someone else,” said Matten.
A reception will take place at the cricket club after the memorial service.
