Chance to Shine Street Launched in Devon

The Devon Cricket Foundation (DCF) have launched two new community cricket projects in Plymouth and Torquay with a focus on engaging young adults who do not play at cricket clubs.
Having accessed funding through the cricket charity Chance to Shine, the DCF have been able to start two young adult street programmes.
Chance to Shine Street brings cricket to thousands of young people who traditionally face barriers to getting active. It uses the sport to increase aspirations, promote social cohesion and create opportunities in diverse communities and areas of deprivation. It’s a fast-paced version of the game played with a tapeball - a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape!
"We are delighted to be able to expand our Chance to Shine delivery to include Street Cricket sessions in Plymouth and Torquay.," says Clubs and Programmes Manager, Alex Jopling.
"We hope that these programmes will make a real difference to individuals and increase our engagement with diverse groups as well as people who may face barriers to participating in the sport."
Anyone between the ages of 16 and 30 is welcome to the weekly sessions. The sessions are free, no equipment is needed and you don't even have to have played cricket before!
The Plymouth sessions started in October and run out of Chapel Bridge School in Stonehouse. The school, previously Plymouth College Prep, is kindly providing its facilities for the benefit of the local community.
After a December taster the weekly sessions in Torquay started in January 2024 at St Cuthbert Mayne School in the North of the town.
