Brights Motors North Devon League round-up: Newton (pictured) clocks Lynton & Lynmouth for a double ton

Matt Newton, who scored a double hundred for Barnstaple & Pilton against Lynton& Lynmouth

MATT Newton earned the nickname ‘Roy Castle’ by becoming a record breaker with a double hundred that propelled Barnstaple & Pilton to a 163-run win over Lynton & Lynmouth in Division Two of the Blights Motors North Devon League.

The home side scored 317 for six, thanks largely to Newton’s 203. Batting at first wicket down he faced 109 balls, and scored 162 in boundaries, bludgeoning 33 fours and five sixes.

Newton’s knock was the highest for his club – and the highest at the ground. He got support from Jamie Sutton 50, with whom he shared a partnership of 222-runs for the fifth wicket. 

Although Lynton’s bowlers struggled against the onslaught, there were a couple of wickets for skipper Andy Keach and Harvey Jones. 

Lynton and Lynmouth’s chase was led by David Brierley (41) and Tristan Jones (34) before they capitulated to 154 all out. Tony Gilbert, B&P’s veteran ‘mystery spinner’ orchestrated their demise with four for 17. William Simpson helped with three for 22

Newton Tracey, who defeated Victoria Park by 41 runs in the other Division Two fixture.

Newton were all out for 195 in the last over. Kieran Soper top scored with 73, and there were chip-ins from the Robson twins: Connor (40) and Dominic (26). 

Adrian Scarrett (5-36) took the bowling plaudits for Victoria Park. His figures included three of the wickets to fall as Newton slid from 192 for six to 195 all out in the dash for runs at the end.

The Robson boys decimated the Viccy Park reply by taking four wickets each – Dominic (4-18), Connor (4-30) – as they were bustled out for 154. Rob Boundy top scored with 35; Jack Ancill helped with 34.Bridestowe & Belstone batter Shaquan Glasgow, who helped himself to 179 against Bideford

Bridestowe & Belstone defeated visiting Bideford by 109 runs in Division One thanks to another massive innings by a number-three batsman.

Shaquan Glasgow, who hit 179 not out, faced 109 balls and hit 20 fours and 12 sixes. Next highest were 47 extras. Skipper Richard Drake weighed in with 31, as B&B amassed 311 for eight. Bideford’s Elliot Curry (5-33) was easily the pick of the bowlers.

Martin Stewart top scored with 45, and veteran James Ford was next best on 28, in a Bideford total of 202 all out. Andy King with four for 31 had the stand-out figures of the eight bowlers used by Drake.

Westleigh prevailed by a five-wicket margin against visiting Nomansland.

Nomansland, who won the toss and batted, were bundled out for 137 midway through their 30th over.

Xavier Warmbrunn, who is assisting Devon League side Shobrooke Park this season, top scored with 39 for Nomansland. Joe Webber got 34. 

James Starkey (4-15) had the best figures of the five Westleigh bowlers used, all of who took at least one wicket.

Andrew Mackenzie- Shapland was unbeaten on 59 as Westleigh knocked-off the runs inside 25 overs. Mark Jarvis (22) and 27 extras helped.
