BEN Chaloner marked his first appearance for Kenn in 10 months with a blistering double century for the 2ndXI against Teignmouth 3rd XI.

Chaloner’s 210 not out came from just 110 deliveries - 35 of those went for boundaries. His first 50 was comparatively slower than the remaining 150, as it took him 34 balls to raise the bat for the first time.

It took Chaloner just a further 24 balls to reach three figures. On what was the hottest weekend of the season so far, the Teignmouth bowlers were hit to all parts of the Hazeldown Nursery Pitch. It was the 31st double century scored in the 54-year history of the DCL, and the 18th highest.

Chaloner was supported by Richard Toon (40) and Harry Lovell (45), whilst extras added 42 to the score. Graham Stone, one of the driving forces behind Kenn's developments

Young Kai Wilkins was the pick of the Teignmouth bowlers; his eight overs went for 51, two-and-a-half runs an over less than the overall Kenn run rate, as the away side posted 360/3.

Teignmouth in reply were dismissed for 98, the top-scoring batter was veteran Kevin Jones (24) before he was trapped in front by Ben Parry. Ollie Prewer returned remarkable bowling figures (3-8) from his six-and-a-half overs.

Victorious Kenn captain, Ian Hutchings, had nothing but praise for his side, and for Ben Chaloner in particular.

“Ben is a fabulous cricketer and a highly regarded and valued member of Kenn CC. Considering it was his first game for 10 months, it was a phenomenal innings and one that gives the whole club a lift.

“It was great to see Rich Toon make 40, and the 45 from Harry Lovell, one of our home-grown players, was a real delight.

“Our bowling attack shared the wickets around, with another of our youth graduates, Ollie Prewer, taking three. Another talented youngster, Ben Parry, joined us this year, and he is already eyeballing top wicket take for the 2s.

“The team narrowly missed out on promotion last year, so the aim for this year is to be there or thereabouts again. Having our 2s higher up the league benefits the whole club, namely by making the transition of players from 2s to 1s that little bit easier.”

Kenn have also been investing in their ground back at Trehill, securing high-quality facilities for their two senior teams, and their 60+ colts on a Friday evening.

“Players who haven’t been there for a few years are surprised at how much we have moved on with sight screens, covers, new outdoor nets, electronic scoreboard, BBQs and our beloved Kenn Shed bar.

"The standard of the playing facilities has come on enormously under the watchful stewardship of Graham Stone and Tony Gosling.”

“The youth section continues to grow, with 60-70 kids receiving weekly training and a busy schedule of games, and we now combine the youth awards evening with the senior awards evening, as we continue to drive our one club agenda.”
