BRIGHTS MOTORS NORTH DEVON LEAGUE
HEATHCOAT’S unbeaten run in the Brights Motors NDL Division One continued with a hard-fought win at Hatherleigh by 36 runs.
Winning the toss and opting to bat might not have looked such a good option from skipper Chris Salter’s viewpoint when Heathcoat were 136 for nine.
Jack Probert (4-39), Oscar Moore (3-45) and Cameron Rowlands (2-27) had Heathcoat in all sorts of trouble. Harry Pryce (33) and Will Edwards (32) were the main run getters up to that stage.
A last-wicket partnership of 78 between Daniel Pugsley (66) and skipper Salter (20no) took Heathcoat to an all-out total of 214.
Salter said as the last man in he knew he had to stick around to help ‘improve the score’ for Heathcoat to have a chance of winning.
“Dan played with maturity and a great degree of sense to get us well above the 200 mark,” said Salter.
“Over the years Dan has showed plenty of promise with the bat, but hasn’t always had the opportunity lower down the batting order. He scored a very impressive 54 not out the previous week in our three-run win over Bridestowe & Belstone – and these runs ensured we maintained our unbeaten run.”
Hatherleigh`s chase was led by Rowlands (42), Kirt Forgham (50). Probert (28) then took Hatherleigh to 153 for five and favourites to win.
Heathcoat fought back and took the last five wickets for 25 runs to claim victory. James Pugsley (4-39) was the main protagonist. Jack McManus (2-33) provided back-up.
James, Dan’s brother, bowled an excellent spell of leg-spin and he unlucky not to pick up five wickets,” said skipper Salter.
North Devon defeated visiting Nomansland by eight wickets with 13 balls to go.
Nomansland’s 40-over total of 240 for seven was largely due to Elliot Butterfield, who carried his bat for an unbeaten 110. and a robust 64 from Xavier Warmbrunn. Roshan Lakmal (3-23) was the pick of the North Devon bowlers. Steve Moore chipped in with two for 43
North Devon's opening partnership of 211 between Lakmal and Nav Vanderbona broke the back of the chase. Lakmal was eventually caught behind for 104 off a delighted Fred Bucknell, who then took a spectacular catch to denyVanderbona (96) a maiden century.
It could not be much tighter at the top of Division Two, where Barnstaple & Pilton (14.38) are the new leaders and Newton Tracey (12.3) are hot on their heels.
