Ava Hansell Shadows Umpires at The Hundred

Sidmouth CC's Ava Hansell had the unique opportunity of shadowing the umpires during last month's women's fixture between Welsh Fire and Trent Rockets.
The opportunity for Ava came about as part of The Hundred Rising programme, which offers up-and-coming talent a platform to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience working or volunteering during the competition.
"Shadow umpiring at The Hundred was an unforgettable experience that gave me a real insight into the world of professional umpiring," says Ava. "I had the chance to meet inspiring umpires like Rose [Dovey], who introduced me to every player we encountered, learn about the important role of the fourth umpire, and even explore the third umpire's van filled with screens and tech used for decision-making."
Ava first got involved in umpiring last summer, partly to understand more about the game, but also as a result of a long-term injury which prevented her from playing. She went on to officiate at a number of events across the summer, including the MCC Foundation Girls Hubs Hardball Day, the Devon Women's Cricket League Super 8s Finals Day and the Women and Girls' Finals Day at Budleigh Salterton CC.
Reflecting on her day in Cardiff, Ava said: "A special highlight was meeting Nat Sciver-Brunt and Shabnim Ismail while they were choosing the match ball. They were both incredibly welcoming, and their openness really added to the amazing atmosphere on the day.
"It felt amazing to be involved in women’s sport in such a direct way. Seeing the professionalism, passion, and teamwork up close was truly inspiring."
