'He worked tirelessly on the ground as well, scarifying, marking wickets and rolling and only once drove the roller into the pavilion wall' – Steve Luffman pays tribute to Andy Gauler

FORMER TAVISTOCK CAPTAIN STEVE LUFFMAN LOOKS BACK ON ANDY GAULER’S CAREER
ANDY Gauler has announced his retirement from cricket before the start of the upcoming season.
A one-club man Andy has played for Tavistock for 49 years, man and boy. During that time his contribution to the club both on and off the field has been enormous.
An all-rounder on the field, he has captained both the first and second elevens. His patient batting at the top of the order and nagging outswing bowling has brought him thousands of runs and hundreds of wickets .His fierce will to win made him a tremendous competitor.
Remarkable
The possessor of a fine pair of hands, Andy regularly grabbed catches in the gully that he had no right to touch. All the more remarkable that this was achieved after contracting TB in his youth and developing type one diabetes at the age of 23.
Off the field Andy has held multiple roles on the committee, was an ever-willing volunteer at club functions and always had a word of advice for any youngster who may ask. He worked tirelessly on the ground as well, scarifying, marking wickets and rolling and only once drove the roller into the pavilion wall!
Andy’s devotion to Tavistock CC will be sadly missed. The whole club would like to wish him all the best in his retirement and hopes to see him soon at the bar on match days.
