More woe for Thorverton | Scores right through the order as Budleigh win by 78 runs

THORVERTON’S situation at the wrong end of the A Division table took a turn for the worse when they lost by 78 runs to Budleigh Salterton.

Defeat leaves Thorverton rock bottom with just one win in eight games. The distance between them and safety is now 17 points. It was 11.

Lloyd Murrin’s six-ball duck was the only complete failure in a consistent Budleigh batting effort that produced a 50-over total of 254 for eight.

Hugo Hughes (22) and Max Mejzner (46) generated some momentum with a third-wicket stand of 66, which was built on by James Doble (31) and Sam Whitehead (17).

Jack England (39) and Hugh Moore (38no) added another 63 during the rush for runs in the last six overs.

Alex Jopling (2-24) and Shane Yelverton (2-37) booked Thorverton’s most respectable bowling figures.

Runs were scarce at the top of Thorverton’s reply – they were 32 for three at one stage – until Luke Vukusic (24) and Harry Choules (36) started to make some progress.

Putting meaningful partnerships together proved a problem with none greater than the stand of 46 between Vukusic and Choules that got the running total to 78 for four.

Hughes (3-14), Sid Fereday (3-32) and Moore (2-43) chipped away at the lower order as Thorverton subsided to 176 all out. Bobby Heard made 20 in a lost cause.

Ed Doble, the Budleigh skipper, said: "Happy to pick up another win, our batting hasn’t fully clicked but with Hugh batting at nine it shows great depth in the line up.

"All four seamers bowled fantastically and Simaant Dubey (10-0-34-1) was at his economical best."

Jake Choules, the Thorverton captain, said: “We were outplayed in all departments by Budleigh. who played really well.

“Not a huge amount of positives this week, other than we haven’t lost too much more ground in terms of points thanks to other results.”
