Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup Round One | Sandford 2nd XI win nailbiter | Heathcoat 2nd XI go big

SAM Taylor’s 95no wasn’t enough to stop Bovey Tracey 2nd XI fall to defeat against Plymstock in the first round of the Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup.
Taylor came in at 16 for two, after Adam Frost (two for 11) dismissed both Bovey Openers for single figure scores.
Another Sam, this time Veal, tried to build a partnership with Taylor, however struggled to get going, he was gone for a less than a run a ball 23.
Captain Dan Green was next to partner Taylor, and had more success. He whacked 45 from just 21, including five sixes, as the pair put on 99 together. Tom Mitch was the man to break the partnership, bowling Green.
Bovey eventually posted 187 for 5 from their 20 overs, and had it not been for Taylor’s 43 ball knock of ten sixes and four fours, things could have looked very different.
Freddie Harvey (two for 39) got rid of both Plymstock openers early, and Dan Green accounted for Chester Oldfied. All three batters were gone in the teens.
Tom Mitch steadied the ship with 41, and was ably supported by Adam Frost (37). Archie Hall was called to the crease after the dismissal of Sam White, and was in a hurry to finish things. He hit four sixes in his 36 runs, needing only 14 balls to get there, and to finish the game with four wickets still intact.
Plymstock captain Mitch was wary of the threat his opposition posed in the shorter format, “it was a good win against a side who are very good in the shorter format. There was a very short boundary one side, so we expected plenty of runs.”
“Billy Gibson and Adam Frost bowled very well up top to restrict them early, but they batted well to get up to a competitive total.”

Kingsbridge saw off Ivybridge 2nd XI by 18 runs in a low-scoring affair to book their place in the next round. Despite losing the top three for a combined 21 runs, Kingsbridge rebuilt around captain James Fletcher, who hit 48.
Matt Hammett was the only other batter to reach 20 as Kingsbridge reached 137 for 8 from their allotted overs.
Freddie Ford (three for 12) and Flynn Taylor (two for 20) had fun with the Ivybridge top order, reducing them to 19 for three. A 55 run partnership between Sam Northmore (36) and Owen Cocks (21) swung the pendulum back in Ivybridge’s favour.
Richard Carr, despite going for 46 runs, took the two important wickets of Cocks and Northmore, and Freddie Ford returned to the action, getting Alfie Lewis Frost for just one run. A quick 15 late in the day from Archie Friend wasn’t enough to help Ivybridge, as they were all out for 119.
Exmouth’s 2nd XI overcame Cullompton 2nd XI by 6 wickets, despite Felix Joseph’s 68no.
Batting first, Cullompton largely struggled, only Joseph reached more than the 16 posted by Elliot Rowland as they stuck 130 on the scoreboard.
Richard Baggs’ 37 help put Exmouth on their way to chasing, Matt Edworthy’s (25no) helped to see them home to a comfortable victory at the end of the 18th over.
Fifty-one and two wickets from Tom Gidney was enough of an allround performance for Sandford 2nd XI to see off Upottery.
An opening stand of 57 by Ben Chaloner (29) and Jon James (28) gave Gidney an invitation to build on a strong platform. He put on 40 with Jack James (30no) as Sandford scored 172 for seven .
Matt Broom gave Sandford a scare with 63, and there was 35 for Ryan Botley, however Upottery’s runs weren’t coming quick enough, and with six needed to win from the final ball, they could only manage a single as they fell four runs short.
A century from Dan Butler helped Heathcoat 2nd XI pile on the runs against Alphington & Countess Wear.
Butler had faced 58 balls by the time he was gone for 101, his captain Lee Dixon was next best with 44no from just 13 balls as they posted 230 for 4.
Artie Evans then ripped through the Alphington line-up, taking four wickets for 18 runs as Heathcoat won by 108 runs.
Elsewhere there were wins for Torquay & Kingskerswell 2nd XI, Barton, Seaton, Sidmouth, and Stoke Gabriel.
