C East round-up – week nine: Three wickets for Hatton (pictured) and Thomas for Heathcoat in win over Exmouth
HEATHCOAT 2nd XI had a harder task than anticipated beating C East cellar dwellers Exmouth 2nd XI by 19 runs.
Tom Lock made 42 opening-up for Heathcoat, Will Hall-Tomkin chipped in 38 in the middle and the combined efforts of Paul Elliott (25) and skipper Matt Hodson (21) used the total from 142 for seven to 187 all out.
Rahmatullah Mohammadi (4-29) had Exmouth’s stand-out bowling figures. Bob Dawson, still playing from time to time 40 years after his first appearance in the Devon League, had a respectable two for 34. Andy Murray (9-2-24-1) proffered little to go after.
Exmouth, winless this season, were in with a chance at 126 for three with Oliver French on his way to a top score of 57. Tom Rintoul had already been and gone for 39.
The game was effectively won and lost during an Exmouth collapse to 147 for seven then 154 for eight as Artie Evans (2-44) and Hodson (3-30). Murray lingered for a while before Luke Thomas (3-33) condemned Exmouth to 168 all out.
SANDFORD 2nd XI’s roller-coaster season continued with a seven-wicket defeat at the hands for new leaders Ottery St Mary.
Eight matches into the season, which is now at the halfway stage, Sandford have yet to win two games in a row.
Sandford’s top order batting was back in the hutch in a running total of 31 for four, plus Ellie Bishop who had retired hurt.
Andrew Fry (49) and tail-ender Ollie Knight (20) staved off total embarrassment by getting the score up to 113 all out.
Will Harrison and Ben Major had two wickets each for Ottery in the first five. John Buckland (3-30) kept up the good work.
Ottery lost wickets at nine, 51 and 104 in the 23.5 overs taken to wipe out the target.
Sam Brook made 26, Rhys Norman hit a run-a-ball 54 and Alex Clements was 31 not out at the end.
Victory took Ottery past former leaders Shobrooke Park, who had a bye week in a division with an odd number of teams.
MILES Lewis struck an unbeaten 80 that steered Sidmouth 2nd XI to a three-wicket win over Teignmouth & Shaldon on the Fortfield.
Harrison Linnitt top scored for Teignmouth & Shaldon with 40 in a disappointing total of 162 all out.
Josh Couch made 21 in the only other score above 16. Couch and Linnitt were two of the five wickets snared by Ethan Chiappe (5-25). Cameron Neame had three for 34.
The disappointment for T&S captain Seamus McKenna would have been leaving more than 13 overs out there.
Sidmouth found knocking off the runs a challenge as Oscar McCallum (4-34) and Liam Gardner (3-18) picked-off batters at regular intervals.
Teignmouth & Shaldon probably fancied their chances of a win after sending Sidmouth tumbling from 37 for two to 46 for seven.
Lewis found a stable running mate in Riley Pugsley, who contributed 13 not out to a match-winning stand of 120. Thirty-two wides helped.
UPOTTERY leapfrogged Exeter 2nd XI out of the C East bottom two with a comfortable 70-run win over the city side.
Upottery’s all-out tally of 174 may have looked modest, but Exeter staggered to 104 in reply. And they did well to get that far having been 37 for eight at one stage.
Connor McCoy (45) and Ryan Pulman (28) were Ottery’s two sentient run scorers. Sandwiched between them were 32 extras.
Exeter’s Alex Jarman led the team off with five wickets to his name, closely followed by Muhammad Mashal (4-48).
McCoy pitched his case for man-of-the-match with six of the first eight wickets to fall. Ben Kidson claimed the other two.
Mashal (30) and Jarman (31) kept Upottery out in the field longer than they anticipated while adding a face-saving 67 runs for the ninth wicket.
SHORBOOKE Park return to the fray this Saturday with a trip to the County Ground to face Exeter 2ndXI.
