Six-wicket win over Paignton takes Exeter into top spot | Four wickets for Fraser (pictured) and three more for Read

ALL change … again! Exeter are the new leaders of the Tolchards DCL Premier Division after beating Paignton by six wickets to knock them off top spot.

It was a taste of their own medicine for Paignton, who had done the same thing seven days earlier to Exmouth. 

The new one, two, three in the Premier Division is Exeter (150pts), Paignton (142) then Exmouth (141).

Paignton were bowled out for 104 in their own back yard at Queen’s Park by Cameron Fraser (4-15), Sam Read (3-13) and Tom Simmons (2-19).

Luke Medlock’s 35 batting third wicket down was as good as it got for Paignton, who probably lost the game in the six overs between being 76 for four and 90 for eight.

Exeter set-off in hot pursuit with opener Oli Gribble – 41 off 31 deliveries – leading the way.

Three wickets fell in the 50s – one to Aya Gqamana (2-28), two to Rory Medlock (2-12) – but the combined talents of skipper Seb Linnitt (33) and Will Price (17no) got the job done inside 19 overs.

Linnit, stll leading Exeter in the absence of Jon Lewis-Oliver, said: "Cameron Fraser set the tone with a wicket with his second ball of the match.

"Luke Medlock had a quick cameo, until Sam Read entered the attack and caused more wickets to tumble.

"Tom Simmons bowled a mature area and got the better of the middle order. Fraser bowled too fast for the tail to see him off, leaving just 104 to be chased.

"Oli Gribble took apart the opening bowlers, giving us momentum. A few wickets went there way, however myself and Price were able to get over the line."

Harry Ward, the Paignton captain, described it as ‘a disappointing result’ adding: “But not one we’ll dwell on. 

“Credit to Exeter: they outplayed us and deserved the win. We’ll learn from it, put it behind us, and focus on bouncing back against Cornwood this Saturday.”
