E Division West round-up – week 10: Babbacombe still top despite defeat by chasers Kenn
KENN defeated Babbacombe by three wickets in the top-of-the-shop clash in the E Division East.
Babbacombe were held to 188 for six in their 45-over allocation, which Kenn knocked-off with more than six overs to spare.
The one-two at the top of the table is still Babbacombe then Kenn, but the distance between them has narrowed from 28 to 17 points.
Rob Redding’s prolific season for Babbacombe continued with 55 opening up. His stats are 330 league runs at an average fractionally below 50. Adrian Lipton, newly arrived from Barton, top scored with 75 not out.
Kenn’s run chase was anchored by opener Martin Swannell (52), the former South Devon and Paignton batter, who was third out on 117. Ollie Walter (32) and Chris May (21) just about wrapped it up.
TAIL-enders Andy Bees and Charlie Martyn were the match-winners for Cornwood 3rd XI in a one-wicket victory over Paignton 3rd XI.
Paignton eventually mustered 185 for nine in the 45-over game, which was probably not what skipper Tim Ward hoped for when they were 105 for four. Ella Gill (21), Harry Roberts (35) and veteran Jason Woodcock (19) all chipped in.
Losing four wickets for six runs – Roberts the first of them – changed the complexion of the game. Ward batted time to make 46 not out in Paignton’s final total.
Martyn (2-38), Bees (2-27) and Eoin Hewitt (2-17) took the bowling honours for Cornwood.
Cornwood looked well on the way to winning at 124 for three with 24 overs to go and Josh Whiting on 51 not out. He and Luke Temple-Smith were in the process of putting on 74 for the wicket.
Then Gill bowled Whiting, which started a steady decline to 159 for six, 170 for eight and 175 for nine when Martyn joined Bees in the middle. Ward (3-5) had a lot to do with Cornwood’s woes.
Bees has been in similar situations before as Tavistock 2nd XI, Ashburton and Plymouth 2nd XI have all found out in recent seasons. He was still there on 11 not out when the winning post was passed with Martyn six not out at the other end.
PLYMPTON 2nd XI suffered an eight-wicket pasting when they ran into Bridestowe & Belstone 2nd XI.
Experience was thin on the ground in the Plympton dressing room as skipper Alex Carr and ‘senior pro’ Craig Donohue were assisting a depleted first team. That did not help.
Chris Dunstan (59no) and Jack Sellick (31) were the primary Plympton run makers in their tally of 171.
Noah Metherell (4-30) out-bowled veteran Chris Lavis (2-26) by a whisker in the B&B ranks.
Openers Eddie Jones (52) and Phil Woods (45) got Bridestowe to 93 for one then 118 for two respectively. Metherell (32no) and Paul Penberthy (27no) joined the dots after that it.
WHITCHURCH have now gone six games without a win in the E Division West after going down by 103 runs to Lewdown.
Nick Smith (50), captain Keith Maynard (65) and Ollie Jordan (50no) pointed Lewdown to a total of 257 for seven.
There was a brief blip when three wickets fell getting from 151 for three to 157 for five – Be Hodge (3-75) took two of them – but Jordan and Matty Taylor (26) saw Lewdown over the hump.
Matt Maynard (4-15) struck early as Whitchurch stumble to five for three then 23 for four.
Jack MacKenzie (61) got the train back on the track after a fashion, but reliable travelling companions only lingered for a couple of stops. Tim Shaw (2-14) and Wilf Mallinson (2-40) kept the pressure.
Once MacKenzie handed his ticket in it was downhill all the way from 158 for seven to 154 all out. Matt Maynard picked up two wickets in the tidying-up process.
STOKEINTEIGNHEAD won for the second game in a row when they defeated Stoke Gabriel 2nd XI by 96 runs.
Lishoy George (86) and Asish Jacob (46) were the main run getters for Stokeinteignhead in their total of 253 all out.
Three wickets each for Jamie Clinkett and Joshimon Joshimon helped consign Stoke Gabriel to 157 all out.
