Devon Disability Begin 2026 Season at Ilton CC with Encouraging Return to Softball Cricket
Devon Disability began their 2026 season with an encouraging return to softball cricket at Ilton CC on Sunday, 16 August, with the 30-over match providing a great opportunity for players of all ages and abilities to come together and enjoy the game.
DEVON DISABILITY EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM
The softball format provided an inclusive environment for Devon's mixed-age squad, with players ranging from 12 to 58 years old. The team included players with varied experiences, some who have developed through local cricket clubs and some players who were playing cricket for the first time. The match, therefore, represented an important opportunity for players with different backgrounds and levels of experience to share the field and enjoy being part of this great community.
Devon captain Toby Ward led with an impressive 60 runs. Ward was also amongst the wicket takers, alongside Gavin Jarman and Hugh Allum-Pearce. The performances reflected the enthusiasm within the squad and the progress being made as more players become involved in disability cricket.
For Devon coach Chris Brown, the most important aspect of the match was the opportunity it provided for everyone involved: "It was a great match to be a part of, cricket played in the right spirit. There were some brilliant moments during the match; a personal highlight was one of our youngest players being cheered on by both teams when making his first county runs.
"My thanks to Somerset for a brilliant day. Disability cricket is growing in Devon, building on Damian [Price, former Disability programme lead]'s great work."
The result might not have been in Devon's favour; however, it provided the players a stage to showcase their talent and build upon before facing Somerset again on 13 September. Devon's disability programme supports various initiatives across the county and welcomes anyone interested in getting involved.
