JAMIE Overton smashed an explosive maiden century as Somerset's total domination of Warwickshire continued on the third day of their Bob Willis Trophy match at Edgbaston.

North Devon CC's Overton, batting at number ten, clubbed 120 (92 balls, 15 fours, six sixes) and, with Steven Davies (123 not out, 182 balls, 16 fours) lifted his side to 413 for nine declared, a lead of 292.

Warwickshire, bowled out for 121 in the first innings, then stumbled into tea at 54 for three second time around, looking down the barrel of an innings defeat.

Davies and Overton came together at 226 for eight and turned a handy lead into a crushing one with a stand of 180 in 29 overs - a Somerset ninth-wicket record against Warwickshire.

The lack of depth in a home attack without the injured Olly Stone and Liam Norwell was ruthlessly exposed as Tim Bresnan took four for 99 and Olly Hannon-Dalby finished with four for 104 while the rest returned a combined one for 207.

After Somerset resumed on 214 for six, they soon lost Lewis Gregory, who skied Bresnan to mid-off, and Roelof ven der Merwe, who edged Hannon-Dalby behind. That was the start of the bowlers' punishment.

Davies completed his 25th first class century from 150 balls. Overton reached his 50 from 50, celebrated by pulling Henry Brookes into the Hollies Stand for six, charged to 80 at lunch and then completed his maiden ton, from 84 balls, in his 98th first class innings.

He finally fell to the admirably persevering Bresnan and 16 balls later the declaration arrived. In went Warwickshire, needing 292 to avoid an innings defeat and, after ten balls, the first wicket arrived when Rob Yates left a straight one from Jack Davey.

Somerset's seamers bristled with confidence and each one - Craig and Jamie Overton, Davey and Gregory, applied constant pressure. Bears batsmen Sam Hain and Ian Bell, devoid of confidence, soon succumbed to it. Both continued their unproductive sequences as Hain edged Jamie Overton's third ball to first slip and the Bell nicked Gregory to wicketkeeper Davies.

With Matt Lamb nursing a cracked big toe, so able to bat only in severe discomfort, Warwickshire need to produce a batting miracle to escape defeat.
